FAQ

GENERALLY ASKED QUESTIONS.

WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY?
Aromatherapy is the controlled use of Professional Clinical Aromatherapy Quality essential oils to promote health and well-being. By focusing on restoration of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health; thus, creating specific physiological and emotional responses. The active constituents (chemical molecules) within the essential oils create specific therapeutic actions within the individual. Examples of therapeutic actions are antiviral, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibacterial, aphrodisiac, cell proliferant, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, fungicidal, nervine, sedative, stimulant, and vulnerary. This is just to name a few, please read the therapeutic actions listed for each essential oil in the product description. This statement has not been evaluated by the FDA. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
WHAT IS AN ESSENTIAL OIL?
An essential oil is lipophilic (fat-soluble), volatile, highly concentrated odorous extract obtained from various parts of a plant such as: flowers, leaves, twigs, bark, peel, seeds, berries, root, wood, and resins. Methods of extraction are steam distillation, expression, and solvent extraction. I would like to add my personal insight of essential oils and I perceive them to be wondrous nectars and literally “GIFTS FROM NATURE!”
HOW DO YOU APPLY AROMATHERAPY?
Methods of application for aromatherapy are inhalation, diffusion, and topical dermal (skin) application. Essential oils are not recommended to be taken orally or internally. Although some European Physicians will prescribe essential oils internally, it is not within the scope of this business and this website to do so. The most common and most rapid method is through inhalation. The tiny molecules make contact with the sensory nerves in the nasal passage. These molecules trigger receptor sites and then send information to the olfactory bulb. These messages are transmitted to the limbic system of the brain. The complex limbic system is triggered by nerve impulses which trigger neurotransmitters and hormones that regulate bodily functions and emotional responses. Tiny molecules enter the bloodstream via the dermis (skin) and are then diffused around the body. The essential oil molecules interact with the cells in the various body systems to create various physiological and psychological responses.
ARE ESSENTIAL OILS SAFE?
Essential oils are incredibly concentrated! Essential oils should always be diluted and never be applied directly to the skin (please read the caution and contraindication information on each specific oil). Additionally, there is a recommended daily dose for essential oils (RDD). Avoid eyes and mucus membranes. Do not take internally. If under the care of a doctor, pregnant, nursing, taking any medications, or have skin sensitivity, consult before using. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Essential oils are flammable. It is recommended to perform a skin patch test when using essential oils. Dilute 1 drop of essential oil in a carrier (base) oil and place a small amount on your inner forearm. Apply a waterproof band aid/bandage for 24 hours. If you feel any irritation or have any allergic reaction immediately remove band aid/bandage and discontinue use of essential oil and rinse area with soap and water.
HOW DO I STORE MY ESSENTIAL OILS?
Essential oils should be kept in dark colored glass bottles to keep the integrity of the oils in the most pristine condition. Rule of thumb to remember with essential oils, keep them stored away from heat and direct sunlight. Oxygen also degrades an oil over time so remember to keep the essential oil cap on tightly. Another factor for storing essential oils is to keep them away from moisture. So, keep your essential oils stored away from humidity. The essential oil will have a “cloudy” look if it contains moisture. Citrus oils do degrade quicker, so this is something to bear in mind. Some people do store their essential oils in the refrigerator.
WHY DO WE USE LATIN NAMES FOR ESSENTIAL OILS?
The main reason is to “IDENTIFY CORRECTLY” the particular plant/essential oil. There are many, many plants that share the same “common name” of a plant and physically look very similar. However, there may be many different variations of the plant with different chemical compositions (chemotypes). Additionally, Latin is a “dead language” – meaning it is no longer used. This gives the language the advantage of not being changed or redefined by different spellings. Plus, once you master it the pronunciations sound really “COOL!”
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF AROMATHERAPY/FRAGRANCE?
Your sense of smell is actually your greatest memory trigger. It can literally take you back in time 20 years instantly to a distant memory associated with a particular aroma! The word perfume (Per Fumum) in Latin literally means “through smoke.” The history of fragrance dates back thousands of years. In Greece 4000 BC the first form of perfume was incense used in religious ceremonies. The Egyptians around 3000 BC literally developed their own perfume industry. They used resins and oils for embalming, religious ceremonies, to fragrance banquets and themselves. An Arabian chemist called Avicenna (AD 980-1036) developed the first process of distillation. Rene-Maurice Gattefosse (1881 to 1950) known as the “father of Aromatherapy” was a chemist, an author, and a scholar and coined the word “AROMATHERAPY.” Gattefosse burned his hand quite extensively during a perfumery experiment. Quite by accident he plunged his hand into a container of lavender essential oil and was amazed at the rapid healing, and very little scarring. Thus, the beginning of Aromatherapy! Queen Elizabeth of Hungary commanded a “Queen of Hungary Water.” This was the beginning of modern-day perfume and consisted of rose water and orange flower water.
WHAT ARE NEBULIZING DIFFUSERS?
Nebulizing diffusers are state-of-the-art technology. Nebulizing diffusers are a relatively new concept and use no heat and are also considered to be cold air diffusion. The diffusers use high velocity pressurized air and a jet nozzle through the process of nebulization to achieve evaporation. It breaks down the essential oils into molecules without altering them. This produces a particle small enough for the lungs and body to absorb quickly. The Fleur Aromatherapy Professional Clinical Aromatherapy Quality essential oils and essential oil blends will reach the recipient in their natural state and provide all the original therapeutic benefits from the essential oils. What is important to realize with nebulizing diffusers is that they “DO NOT” require water or any base oil. It is very important to run a cycle “isopropyl rubbing alcohol” through the diffuser after each bottle of oil has been used up. This is imperative to keep the pump in good working condition and for the longevity of the pump. Both Fleur Aromatherapy essential oils and Fleur Aroma diffuser fragrance oils can be used in the nebulizing diffusers with the exception of essential oils/essential oil blends with a high viscosity (thickness) such as: resinous essential oils.
WHAT ARE FLEUR AROMA SCENTED DIFFUSER OILS?
The “Fleur Aroma” line of scented diffuser oils are for aroma only and are not intended for use in professional clinical aromatherapy. They are an essential oil/fragrance oil blend designed specifically for the fleur aromatherapy line of nebulizing diffusers.
